This position is for Phase One of a two-phase project. Phase One consists of:

·         Building a New Home ($600K)

·         Building a Community Center ($500K)

 

 

Job Description - Development Director for Heartbeet Lifesharing

 

Heartbeet Lifesharing seeks a Development Director based in Hardwick, Vermont. This position reports directly to Hannah Schwartz, Executive Director of Heartbeet Lifesharing.

 

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Development Director plans, directs, and coordinates all development activities, major fundraising activities and special projects, by performing the following duties personally or through co-workers / staff.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Regular duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

1.      Fund Raising –Create and implement annual development plan and strategy and work closely with the financial committee.  Leads and manages Heartbeet's overall development efforts to meet an annual budget of just under one million dollars. Establishes short- and long-range goals for unrestricted funding sources and enlists support from members of Heartbeet core group. Strategizes and orchestrates methods of approach to institutional donors. Researches public and private grant sources (agencies, corporations and foundations) to identify sources of restricted and unrestricted funding. Works with program administrative team  to develop funding-related projects. Organizes individual donor campaigns (e.g. major donors, direct mail and board of directors). Organizes solicitation drives for pledges of ongoing support from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Manages annual giving campaign.

 

2.      Major Gift/Donor Support – Produces major donor, board and special category solicitations/ support materials with the intent to retain or upgrade gifts when possible. Cultivates and nurtures donors by producing specialized correspondences, preparing letters of acknowledgment, scheduling and attending in-person visits.

 

3.      Grant Writing – Writes grant proposals and reports to corporate, foundation, and government funders.

 

4.      Planned Giving Program – Establishes program and channels for planned giving. Tracks progress of pending Legacy and Bequest gifts. Fulfills requests, produces correspondences and encourages partial/early disbursement where appropriate.

 

5.      Donor Database and Records Management – Supervises and coordinates activities of co-workers engaged in maintaining computer and paper records of contributors and grants. Maintains security and quality controls. Generates queries, reports, exports and any other collection data as needed. Manages any related vendors.

 

6.      Development & Public Relations – Coordinates with the Executive Director and supervises most development and public affairs matters, particularly the creation of various communications such as the annual report, semi-annual newsletter, general boilerplate, general presentations, executive correspondence and speeches. Produces general content for website.

 

7.      Outreach – Leads and maintains current out-reach events / programs.

 

EDUCATION:

 Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent prior experience, Masters degree welcomed. Understanding of non-profit world and fundraising.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

o   At least 4 years of fundraising/development experience in a service industry or with a nonprofit, with emphasis on grant writing and raising funds

o   Demonstrated ability to think strategically and thorough understanding of strategic development

o   Thorough understanding of all components of a diversified funding base

o   Proven track record of achieving revenue targets

o   Strong computer skills and knowledge of database programs

o   Experience working with an administrative team in an office setting

o   Strong verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively

o   Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; ability to participate in public speaking events

o   Ability to work well under pressure and be able to handle several projects at one time

o   High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail

o   High degree of initiative and self-motivation

o   Strong partnership-building and event-planning skills

o   Interest, enthusiasm, and affinity for fundraising and working with people
